Mom who confronted Pruitt: "I'm glad he took the hint" and resigned

President Trump tweeted the announcement, saying the agency's deputy administrator will assume the position until the President nominates a new Secretary. Pruitt has been the subject of continued ethics scandals over a number of months but the president had previously stood by a man who had overseen his administration's rolling back of Obama-era environmental regulations.

Yet, in tweets announcing Pruitt's resignation, Trump said the former Oklahoma attorney general had "done an outstanding job".

Pruitt temporarily will be succeeded by Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler, a former lobbyist for a coal mining company whose employees were President Donald Trump's biggest source of campaign contributions in 2016.

Trump on Thursday said he has confidence that Wheeler "will continue on with our great and lasting EPA agenda".

"We have made tremendous progress and the future of the EPA is very bright!" he tweeted.

The praise for Pruitt was far from universal.

"Unlike Mr. Pruitt - who had come to Washington as an outsider and aspiring politician, only to get caught up in a swirl of controversy over his costly first-class travel and security spending - Mr. Wheeler is viewed as a consummate Washington insider who avoids the limelight and has spent years effectively navigating the rules", the Times reported.

That Pruitt has lasted this long is likely attributable to his approach to running the EPA, which many Republicans like Putnam said was unnecessarily burdensome to business under Obama.

His replacement, a former coal lobbyist who is likely to pursue the same regulatory rollback agenda as Pruitt, may not clean up the EPA's act and instead might find himself involved with "corporate cronyism", said Wegmann.

His alleged misconduct has resulted in scores of investigations and inquiries by government ethics authorities ranging from the Government Accountability Office to the EPA's own inspector general to the White House itself. He rented an apartment linked to oil industry lobbyists in a pricey neighborhood of the capital for a mere US$50 a night, a sum he only paid for on nights he actually slept there.

Pruitt also rankled some Republican lawmakers, including in Midwest corn states, because of his efforts to overhaul a USA policy requiring biofuels like corn-based ethanol in gasoline.

Trump noted that Pruitt was under attack from the media but just said "We'll see what happens".

Pruitt has been part of the Trump administration since the beginning.

"We have no illusion both about how far Scott Pruitt is from the kind of administrator that we need and also how unsafe Andrew Wheeler would be", Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club, told TIME before Pruitt's resignation.

The duration of Wheeler's tenure at the EPA is uncertain.

Cabinet members who resigned or were ousted include health secretary Tom Price, secretary of state Rex Tillerson, national security advisor HR McMaster and veterans affairs chief David Shulkin.

"I knew that Mr. Pruitt and I would seriously disagree when it came to policy".
