It would be fair to say that Sweden were outperformed by England on the night, and it's something that Andersson agreed with as he rued "small margins" that cost his side a victory. Not even the England side containing stars like Beckham, Steven Gerrard and a young Wayne Rooney ever got this far at a major tournament.

England scored once in either half to beat the Swedes 2-0 in Samara and reach their first World Cup semifinal since 1990. In 2014, the team didn't even make it out of the group stage.

Sweden manager Janne Andersson had warned his side England were a match for them at set-pieces, and so it proved when Maguire connected with Ashley Young's corner after a low-key first half hour.

"I wasn't born the last time England reached a World Cup semi-final", said Pickford. Mikael Lustig's absence was notable in the Swedish defence that, for the first time at this World Cup, had troubles in the air.

The former England global - who is out in Russian Federation as a pundit for BBC One - took to Twitter this morning dressed in a Three Lions tracksuit and posted a amusing video as he issued a rallying cry to the team in front of the mirror.

Speaking after the game, captain Harry Kane said: "I thought we were fantastic today, Sweden made it very hard".

Russian Federation v Croatia, World Cup quarter-final
Croatia , having used their four substitutions for the match were unable to change him. "What a goal by Denis Cheryshev ". Croatia showed flashes of their stellar attacking game when they beat Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland to top their group.

The third-place game, between the semifinals losers, will be played on Saturday, July 14.

Could it be. coming home?

Sterling got hold of the loose ball but his shot was deflected over.Sterling's movement was very good, though, causing Sweden's slow defense problems throughout. Of England's 11 goals, eight have come from set pieces, while Kane leads the Golden Boot standings with six goals. I think that's a right description for us.

"I think there was a coach who once said about their team that they're quite easy to analyse but quite hard to beat".

Virtually from the kickoff, Sweden sent a long pass forward to tall striker Ola Toivonen and looked for a flick-on.

Sir Geoff Hurst, who won the World Cup with England in 1966, tweeted: "Magnificent win, magnificent display, magnificent team, and some terrific individual performances, Trippier, Pickford, Maguire, Sterling, absolutely delighted".
