Evacuations ordered near Goleta; wildfire burns several buildings, threatens homes

The Klamathon, which has destroyed 15 structures and blackened almost 22,000 acres (8,900 hectares), was only 5 percent contained as of Saturday.

CAL FIRE and the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department confirmed a civilian fatality from the Klamathon fire Friday.

The fire is now zero percent contained and is "fast-moving", Eliason said.

The hot temperatures and low humidity, as well as gusty winds, create conditions in which fires can "grow rapidly in size and intensity", a National Weather Service alert cautions.

The Holiday Fire, one of more than three dozen major blazes burning across the U.S. West, broke out on Friday evening near the beach community of Goleta, California, South of Santa Barbara, and raced through the seaside foothills.

Several homes also have burned in a fire in the San Diego County town of Alpine.

Elsewhere in California, a massive blaze northwest of Sacramento had destroyed nine homes, officials said.

In a Friday afternoon press conference, Lopey said the fire had destroyed 40 structures.

The fire, spanning 140 square miles (360 square kilometers), was partially contained, but crews struggled in steep, rugged terrain.

350 fire personnel were battling the blaze from ground and air. Hundreds of people living and working in the vicinity have been evacuated.

The fire has burned about 75 square miles (193 square kilometers) and destroyed 90 structures, including homes, cabins, sheds and garages, since starting July 1 in mountains about 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Salt Lake City.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife says the Iron Gate Fish Hatchery along the Klamath River, the Klamathon Road fishing access below the hatchery and the Horseshoe Ranch Wildlife Area have been closed as a precaution.

ODOT said conditions could change depending on fire behavior throughout the day.

On Thursday, the newly formed Klamathon Fire prompted Interstate 5 to shut down and Governor Jerry Brown to declare a state of emergency.

The blaze is threatening 300 homes near Hornbook, California, a town of 250 people about 14 miles (22 kilometers) south of the OR border.

The largest fire burning in the state is known as the County Fire, and has scorched more than 88,000 acres in Napa and Yolo counties.
