After taking the second set to level things up, Van Uytvanck comfortably got over the line by holding serve and punishing her sloppy opponent to book a place in round three.

Van Uytvanck had never made it out of the second round at SW19, but she showed aggression and finesse to stun Muguruza.

Top seed Simona Halep showcased all the hallmarks of a champion-in-waiting as she dispatched China's Zheng Saisai in a 7-5, 6-0.

Muguruza admitted it had not been her day.

"I feel good on grass now", said Halep, who after the first set overcame the hard Zheng slice.

In the only other upset on the day veteran Dominika Cibulkova sent No. 22-seeded Brit Johanna Konta out of the tournament 6-3, 6-4. "I'm pretty excited for him". "I want to see Argentina win something".

For Djokovic, meanwhile, victory was his 60th at Wimbledon.

When the decision was reversed, van Uytvanck thought her job was done because Muguruza's return attempt failed.

"Confidence was there. I'm playing well the last couple of days, so that's what I took with me on the court", said Van Uytvanck, twice a titlist on the WTA tour.
