At least 54 die in Quebec amid extreme heat
The 2010 heat wave was one of the hottest on record in over 60 years and was linked to some 280 deaths over a period in July. About it reports the Montreal Gazette, citing data from the press service of the Minister of health of the province.

Previous reports suggested that a lone poacher had been attacked, but further investigation of the awful scene suggested at least two people were devoured by the lions.

"It now appears likely that the dog had been alerted by something else out of the ordinary coming from the lions", the Facebook post said.

Fox said that he found a high-powered rifle with a silencer, an axe, wire cutters and a backpack filled with water and food supplies near to the site, which led him to suspect that the victims were poachers. He also said that it was found three pairs of shoes, and the lions had to inject a tranquilizer to pick up human remains.

He says the reserve's wildlife veterinarian darted the lions so that police forensic investigators could search for evidence. Reserve staff immediately called the Association of Eastern Cape Game Reserves Anti-Poaching Cluster and the police.

Three rhinos were killed in nearby Port Alfred in May 2018, raising the total of illegal rhino killings in the province to nine for the year.
