Luis Enrique set to be named Spain coach

"The RFEF wants to thank Fernando Hierro for his compromise and sense of duty when taking the reigns of the national team under extraordinary circumstances, as well as performing all his duties".

In a statement on Sunday, the RFEF revealed that Hierro had decided not to revert to his former role as the governing body's sporting director.

Hierro was placed in temporary charge of the team after Julen Lopetegui was sacked on the eve of the tournament.

Fernando Hierro, who led Spain at the 2018 World Cup, has stepped down as coach and will not return to his former role as sporting director.

The Spanish Football Federation were not immediately available for comment.

Spain's La Roja were dumped out of the Mundial by Russia's Sbornaya after Igor Akinfeev proved too good to be beaten during their last 16 clash.

"After many kilometers of walking together, the Royal Spanish Football Federation and Fernando Hierro put an end to their relationship once the participation of Spain in the World Cup in Russia has ended".

The 50-year-old has now also opted againt returning to his post as director at the RSFF.

Spain only won one game at the World Cup, against Iran, and drew their other two group matches vs. Portugal and Morocco.

According to Marca, Spain are keen to get a new manager in place in the not so distant future and the SFF's president Luis Rubiales will nominate Enrique for the vacant position in a meeting at 11.30am at the governing body's headquarters "La Ciudad del Futbol" near Madrid.
