When Cameron resigned after defeat in the Brexit referendum, Davis was appointed back in government by May, Cameron's replacement.

Brexit Secretary David Davis reportedly resigned after a meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May that frustrated him, according to Reuters.

Mr Jackson, who served as a city MP between 2005 and 2017, was chief of staff to David Davis who quit last night due to Britain's Brexit negotiating stance which he said was making it look "less and less likely" that the Conservatives would deliver their manifesto commitment to "leave the Customs Union and the Single Market".

The double resignation late on Sunday has the potential to derail May's government and set in motion a chain of events that could lead to an attempt to oust her as prime minister.

Theresa May faces the greatest threat to her leadership since the general election as she prepares to confront furious backbench MPs on Monday in a bid to convince them to rally behind her Brexit plans.

Conservative MP Peter Bone told BBC News Davis had "done the right thing", adding, "the PM's proposals for a Brexit in name only are not acceptable".

As the minister responsible for the Brexit negotiations, Davis is a major voice in the debate in the UK. Many Conservatives were outraged by this plan for a "soft Brexit", saying it would keep the country tied to the European Union.

The prime minister will have a crunch meeting with members of her Tory party to discuss her plan in Parliament on Monday evening.

"I would like to thank you warmly for everything you have done over the past two years as Secretary of State to shape our departure from the European Union", she said.

"I would like to thank you warmly for everything you have done over the past two years as Secretary of State to shape our departure from the European Union", she added.

Lyon President Says Liverpool FC Target Nabil Fekir Will Stay
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas believes that Liverpool target Nabil Fekir will stay put at the club into next season. France face Belgium in the semi-finals on Tuesday.

Less than nine months remain until Britain leaves the bloc on March 29, 2019.

"I do not agree with your characterisation of the policy we agreed at cabinet", she said.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the Prime Minister "has no authority left and is incapable of delivering Brexit".

The shadow Brexit Secretary said: "John, what we've said is there needs to be a meaningful vote in Parliament".

- His departure leaves May with a hard task to find a replacement who can win the confidence of the pro-Brexit faction in May's Conservative Party whilst delivering on a Brexit plan that outraged many of them.

- To trigger a formal leadership challenge, 48 Conservative lawmakers need to write to the chairman of a committee which represents the interests of Conservative members of parliament who are not part of the government.

The loss of her Brexit negotiator, and potentially another junior minister in the ministry, just two days after the meeting at May's Chequers country residence is a blow to the prime minister and underlines the deep divisions in her ruling Conservative Party over Britain's departure from the EU.

Davis and fellow Brexit backer Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson both agreed to support May's proposal for a softer divorce than she had originally planned, and it seemed she had survived the storm.

But it became the silence of others such as David Davis, which hinted at the uneasiness of the truce which had been agreed.
