91-year-old United States woman dies after helicopter crashes into her house

Virginia State Police confirmed the fatality in a statement Sunday evening.

A 91-year-old woman who died after a helicopter crashed into her condominium in Bristol Commons Sunday was an avid reader and world traveler, according to her relatives.

Fire crews spent Sunday night into Monday putting out the fire and hot spots that came as a result of the crash. Authorities said they were still trying to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter after it went down after 4:30 p.m.in the 1100 block of Settlement Drive.

Several witnesses on scene told the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily that they saw a helicopter in distress in the area shortly before hearing sirens.

The Red Cross is helping those displaced by the crash, and police are working to account for all homeowners and renters who lived in the building, Anaya said. "I just heard a loud "bam" and the whole house was on fire", Sweeney said.

Donald Johnson told the newspaper he was 10 feet away from the crash when it struck his apartment building.

'I was downstairs on the first floor when that thing hit and I had never heard a noise like that in my life.

The National Transportation Safety Board plans a news conference Monday afternoon.
