Torreira featured in all five of Uruguay's World Cup matches and started in their last three, including a 3-0 win over fellow quarter-finalists Russian Federation and a 2-1 round-of-16 win over Portugal.

Lucas Torreira, who starred for Uruguay at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has joined the Gunners from Sampdoria.

Torreira chose not to undergo his medical during the tournament as he wanted to focus on representing Uruguay and he starred for the South American's as they reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by France on Friday.

Torreira becomes Unai Emery's fourth signing as the manager has now won over the hearts of the Arsenal fans who are happy with the changes he has done so far.

Arsenal are also expected to announce the signing of France Under-20 worldwide Matteo Guendouzi, who is set to join from Lorient.

Chelsea agree £53m deal with Juventus on Higuain
Gab Marcotti provides some insight into Roman Abramovich's visa issues and more in-house problems Chelsea are now facing. Higuain arguably recorded his best personal season at Napoli that year as he netted 36 goals in just 35 Serie A games.

"A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup".

Arsenal said Torreira will take over the No. 11 shirt, which was recently vacated by Mesut Ozil when he switched to No. 10 following Jack Wilshere's departure.

The former PSG and Sevilla boss has already snapped up goalkeeper Bernd Leno, defender Stephan Lichtsteiner and Soktratis Papasthathopoulous.

Torreira, 22, played at the base of Sampdoria's midfield diamond last season and is expected to bring bite and defensive nous to Unai Emery's team. "We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season", Emery added.
