Migrant kids to be reunited

Roughly half of the children under 5 years old who were separated from their parents at the border will be back with their moms and dads by a court-imposed deadline Tuesday, but the Trump administration is still not sure when the rest will be reunified.

As for most of the rest of the under-5 children who have yet to reunited with their families, Fabian said that their parents have already been released into the US, have been deported, or are behind bars on criminal charges.

The Tuesday deadline is in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union which won an injunction last month to speed up the reunification of migrant families that were separated under the Trump administration's "zero-tolerance" policy at the border.

Government attorneys told a San Diego judge slightly over half of the children 54 of 102 represented by the ACLU and in Department of Health and Human Services custody will be reunited with their parents in ICE custody.

ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt said in court that the government had taken "significant steps" to reunite families but was still in violation of Sabraw's court order and should be moving more quickly.

More than 2,000 children in all were separated from their parents by US immigration authorities at the border this spring before President Donald Trump reversed course on June 20 amid an global outcry and said families should remain together.

As daunting as the process appeared in court, this week's deadline concerns less than 5 percent of the children separated from their parents in recent months.

Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores had no comment on the discrepancies in the numbers. Yet in a disturbing investigation published Monday, BuzzFeed News has found that to not be the case, detailing the stories of several women who say they were ignored, roughly handled, shackled around the belly, and denied urgent medical care - even as they were miscarrying their children. One child's status is unknown because the government lacks information about the parent, Fabian said. One child has still not had either of its parents identified. In the courtroom, they expressed openness to collaborating on several issues, including searching for parents who have been removed from the USA and double-checking the criminal records.

After the Justice Department asked for a blanket extension, Sabraw ordered the government to turn over a list of the minor children under 5 years old to the ACLU, which it did over the weekend. Some parents of children under 5 were already deported, presenting an extra challenge for reunification. "This is real progress and I'm optimistic that many of these families will be reunited tomorrow, and then we'll have a very clear understanding as to who has not been reunited, why not, and what time-frame will be in place". The administration cited difficulties locating dozens of the youngest children's parents, including at least 19 who had already undergone deportation proceedings. He scheduled another hearing for Tuesday morning. Its database has some information about the children's parents but was not created to reunify families by the court's deadline. But on Monday, she said nine were removed from the United States and another nine were released here.

Six of the 102 children are not eligible for reunification because they have a parent with a criminal history or were separated from someone who is not their parent.
