The Hangover director Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the script, is directing. In recent months, Josh Brolin's Thanos took the crown for most loved villain, but before the Mad Titan hit movie screens, the Joker was king.

Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly closed his deal to play The Joker in a standalone Warner Bros. film, which now has the greenlight to start production in September, per THR. There is no release date attached to the film, but it begins filming this Fall in NY. However, Scorsese's producer Emma Tillinger Koskoff is still aboard here with Richard Baratta as EP.

That's a small budget compared to other superhero blockbusters, but the studio intends for this movie to be more of a "gritty character study" than a standard superhero flick.

"I don't know... it could be an interesting character". With shades of the classic Hitchcock character Norman Bates, the future Joker is more isolated and tortured even before suffering sudden loss after accepting the incredible responsibility of caring for his ailing mother alone.

England's first World Cup semi-final since 1990 attracts few fans
England has gone with a 3-5-2, and the only change was to start Ruben Loftus-Cheek in midfield after Dele Alli injured a thigh. England play Croatia in Moscow on Wednesday night with a place in only their second major tournament final on the line.

Phoenix is not the only A-lister playing the Clown Prince of Crime either; Jared Leto is also preparing to revisit his interpretation, last seen - albeit fleetingly - in 2016's Suicide Squad. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that's what you want to do.

Do you think Phoenix will make a great Joker?

No official release date has been set, but THR claims the film could be in theaters by late 2019.
