With Switzerland back from the World Cup after being eliminated by Sweden in the Round of 16, negotiations can progress and Shaqiri "has been considering his options since his involvement in Russian Federation was ended".

The Reds have now made a formal approach to Stoke for the 26-year-old who has a £13.5million release clause that will enable him to make the switch to Anfield without any fuss following their relegation from the Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp has identified the Switzerland global as one who can bolster his attacking options, while the presence of a release clause in the 26-year-old's contract makes a deal a financially attractive one.

According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool's potential move for Shaqiri and Stoke's interest in Wilson are not linked in the slightest.

However, despite his career falling off track somewhat at Stoke, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp clearly believes the 74-time Swiss global can perform at the highest level and aims to bring him to Anfield this summer.

Since their season ended with defeat in the Champions League final to Real Madrid, Liverpool have added Brazilian midfielder Fabinho to their side from AS Monaco. A deal for the Lyon captain may yet be resurrected after France's World Cup campaign, however.

Despite some impressive displays for the Potters last season, Shaqiri was unable to help the club avoid the drop as Stoke slipped back down to the second tier of English football after a prolonged stay in the Premier League.
