Vulnerable Democrats welcome Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

"I applaud President Trump for his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court", Ivey said in a statement.

Leaving McConnell's office, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said no decisions had been made about requesting documents from the White House.

"Justice Kennedy's retirement makes the issue of Senate control one of the vital issues of our time", he told an audience in Fargo, N.D., last month.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions. "Locked in from the start", is how CNN puts it, adding that Trump liked the 53-year-old for the top court even before Anthony Kennedy announced he was leaving.

The Agri Processor case provides a window into Kavanaugh's thinking when it comes to workers' rights. "Americans do not want or need 40 more years of Trump's values". However, in a Monday night tweet, the group's long-time president, Fred Krupp, proposed that senators ask Kavanaugh whether he will "honor access to the courts to address pollution", as well as honoring "the established protections forged in law to address poisons in air, water and food including the clear [and] present danger of climate pollution?"

Kavanaugh is a longtime fixture of the Republican legal establishment. So far, Trump has installed more than 20 appeals court judges and more than 16 trial court judges on the federal bench.

"Justice Kennedy's resignation letter had barely arrived in the president's hands before several of our Democratic colleagues began declaring their blanket opposition to anyone at all", McConnell said. "If you're going to say "I'm going to support him" today or "I'm not going to support him" today, then you're not doing the job we're here to do". She also lashed out and what she called "liberal activist judges". Kavanaugh later worked with independent counsel Kenneth Starr during the investigation of President Bill Clinton.

McConnell said Kavanaugh was an "outstanding nomination". "When they learn this, they're going to oppose the nominee".

Is there a Supreme Court sign in these tea leaves? That would be binding precedent of the court.

Many Democrats have latched onto Kavanaugh's statement about investigations into presidents. "If we can make that case, we will get a majority".

Gregg Re is an editor for Fox News. "I strongly urge my Senate counterparts not to approve any nominee who was chosen by President Trump until the investigation into his campaign's collusion with Russian Federation has concluded". But Indiana's Joe Donnelly, North Dakota's Heidi Heitkamp and West Virginia's Joe Manchin all say they won't attend. There is a small contingent of Democrats from states that Trump won in 2016 who face narrow paths to reelection this fall.

All three states lean heavily Republican. Trump reportedly was wary of Kavanaugh's close ties to George W. Bush, who nominated him to his current position in 2003. "And a president who is concerned about an ongoing criminal investigation is nearly inevitably going to do a worse job as president". I will conduct a careful, thorough vetting of the president's nominee to the Supreme Court, as I have done with the five previous Supreme Court justices whom I have considered. The president has said he wants a nominee who could serve on the high court for decades.

"He's demonstrated a hostility to the Affordable Care Act that the Trump administration is continually working to undermine", Democratic Sen. He cites involvement of the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank in drafting the list.

The majority of Democrats, senators and otherwise, condemned the nominee. The race is not expected to be competitive. When the announcement is made, the campaign will kick off.

In addition to abortion, the court could shift to the right on the death penalty, racial discrimination, environmental law and gay rights, all areas where Kennedy at least sometimes joined the court's liberal wing. "So am I", Schumer said on MSNBC's Morning Joe. He dissented from a ruling that let an undocumented immigrant teenager get an abortion while in federal custody.
