Sky News Arabic correspondent Faisal bin Huraiz shared an eyewitness video showing an explosion in the direction of what appeared to be Cairo International Airport.

One Twitter user, Matthew Keidas, has said: "This guy says a worker at the airport said it was an explosion at the fuel depot in Cairo airport".

Egyptian state television is reporting that a fire raging as a result of the explosion had been brought under control. Ambulances, police vehicles and security services also rushed to the area of the incident. However, some local residents say that flight operations have not been halted, and air-traffic-tracking website FlightRadar24 reports that Cairo's airport is still operating.

The company clarified in the statement that the airplane had experienced a minor technical difficulty during the push-back process before take-off at Heathrow Airport, not in mid-flight as reported.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known. Authorities are investigating the incident.

There is no confirmation so far of any casualties.
