Emmy Nominations 2018: Modern Family, This Is Us, Snubs and Surprises

Female-led shows and stories also did well as television continued to lead the way in reflecting social change, while the likes of Donald Glover, Tracee Ellis-Ross, Penelope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, Issa Rae, Regina King, and John Legend headed a racially diverse acting line-up. And even some shows that did very well in overall nominations, like HBO's "Game of Thrones", saw some notable stars absent from the final tallies. The Handmaid's Tale star Samira Wiley and New Amsterdam star Ryan Eggold were on hand to announce the nominations to the world on July 12 from the Wolf Theatre at the Television Academy's Saban Media Center.

The streaming service's maneuvering (and not incidentally, expensive Emmy campaigning) paid off with 112 nominations - a significant increase over previous year, edging HBO's 108.

Its nominated shows include sci-fi drama Stranger Things, fictionalised royal biopic The Crown, comedy GLOW and western Godless. Meanwhile, HBO's Thrones and Westworld nabbed 22 and 21 nominations each, while the dark comedy Barry scored 13 nods.

"Stranger Things" executive producer and director Shawn Levy said the streaming service was a joy to work with.

Sharif, daughter to return home
Sharif and his daughter, Maryam Safdar, are now in London, where the three-time former PM's wife is undergoing cancer treatment. The court has declared that Nawaz Sharif and Maryam will be arrested upon their arrival in Pakistan.

Add up all the award nominations and Netflix is now the top Emmy nominated "network", a term that we can now apply in the loosest of terms.

The 2018 Emmy Awards will air Monday, September 17 on NBC at 8 p.m. ET from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. If he wins this year, he'll tie Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul for the most wins in the Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category.

"Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert" was also showered with praise, as was "The Handmaid's Tale's" supporting cast, coming off a just-concluded second season that gave them an opportunity to shine.
