In a statement ahead of Trump's arrival, she said the visit would focus on trade and strengthening defence and security ties, saying there was no stronger alliance than Britain's "special relationship with the US". Trump has said next week's meeting with Putin "may be the easiest" part of his European tour.

Trump and May were speaking to reporters at a press conference following bilateral talks at Chequers, the prime minister's country residence.

But by Thursday, leaders from France, Germany and Italy offered no support for Trump's claim that he had wrung new concessions out of the alliance on their military spending.

May said her country would have "no limit to the possibility of doing trade deals around the world" after Brexit and said trade would be a matter of negotiation.

"I also represent a lot of people in Europe because a lot of people from Europe are in the United States", he said.

However, while Trump and May exchanged warm words, tens of thousands of protesters marched against the USA president through central London, bringing much of the British capital to a standstill.

Following an emergency session at the alliance headquarters in Brussels, the United States president said the other members have agreed an unprecedented increase in defence spending.

Trump even asserted that Johnson, a former mayor of London, "would be a great prime minister". The comments infuriated some of May's Conservative Party colleagues, including one who tweeted, "Where are your manners, Mr. President?" and another who chided Trump for diminishing "the standing of the great country he is meant to lead".

It also seems that Trump and his entourage saw the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation visit as a sales opportunity. "I actually told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn't listen to me".

The US President Donald Trump said that his administration was "tougher on Russian Federation than anybody".

Trump has sided firmly with Brexiteers, saying what May proposed would hurt the chances of a future trade deal between the United Kingdom and the US.

He said that May's new, softer approach to Brexit - which would leave Britain sticking to a "common rulebook" with Brussels on goods - would kill off the chances of a much sought-after U.S. -U.K. trade deal.

"Yesterday I let them know that I was extremely unhappy with what was happening", Trump said at an impromptu press conference, adding, "Now we are very happy".

Another Twitter user re-jigged the lyrics to Atomic Kitten's "Whole Again", writing: "Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape and I cannot forget, Donald, you're the one, You still turn me on, You can hold my hand again".

But after talks with Mrs May he claimed "tremendous things" he said about her had been left out of the Sun story.

Under fire for his warm embrace of Russia's Vladimir Putin, Trump turned a harsh spotlight on Germany's own ties to Russian Federation, declaring Wednesday that a natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive" to Russian Federation.

He added: "You have a mayor who has done a awful job in London".

At the centre of the demonstration is the giant six-metre-high balloon, which was cleared by the London mayor's office to fly over the centre of the city.
