11-year-old girl raped by 17 men in India, officials say

Police in India have arrested 17 men for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl, who has a hearing disability, for several weeks.

Among the 17 arrested were the security guards, plumber and elevator operator, police said.

Amid the shock and outrage over the incident, the accused were arrested and produced before the women's court on Tuesday.

Police say the alleged rapists range in age from 23 to 66. The perpetrators would sedate the girl with sedatives and other drugs before sexually assaulting her.

The incident sent shockwave across the city as details emerged from police investigation, following a complained by the girl's father, an electronic shop owner in the locality. According to more reports, a 22-year-old man Mohit Bharadwaj had successfully persuaded her to ride with him on a motorbike to the residence of an accomplice Rahul Bhonde. The whole company of criminals appeared in court in the Indian city of Chennai, where strengthened security after the last time the locals attacked the men. However, the child eventually informed her older sister who immediately called the police. It is said that the accused drugged her, then took photographs to blackmail her. The huge complex, with many vacant flats, helped the accused take her to deserted areas in the complex. On Monday, her statement was recorded in the Mahila Court, the report added.
