There's a high risk for West Nile virus infections right now in northeast Kansas - as well as much of the rest of the state, the Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment warns.

Mosquitoes in Jackson County, Illinois are able to do more than just annoy residents, some have been found with the West Nile virus.

A batch of mosquitoes trapped this week in Burlington has tested positive for West Nile virus. And one person in East Baton Rouge was infected with the virus but showed no symptoms. According to the agency, four mosquito samples and four dead birds tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the month.

Hanson and his colleagues are taking "aggressive" action to counter what "we consider to be an elevated threat of West Nile virus", he said.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus include fever, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph nodes.

WNV is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes and can cause mild to serious illness.

Mosquito Control also says that because of all the rain, they haven't been able to do their sprays, so weekend missions are scheduled. Water troughs or buckets should be emptied, cleaned, and refilled every two to three days, if possible, to remove any mosquito eggs or larvae.

For most people, a West Nile infection isn't deadly.

Usually, mosquitos are more active at dusk or dawn.

A Cook County resident tested positive for the virus in June, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Use insect repellent, wear long sleeve and trousers, or consider staying indoors during these hours. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, including flower pots, old vehicle tires, rain gutters and pet bowls.

If you use sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and inspect repellent second.

Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good fix.
