Evacuations Ordered After Fire Breaks Out Near Idyllwild

Three firefighters and an unknown number of civilians had burns, but the extent of their injuries wasn't immediately known, McLean said. Braden Varney, 36, a heavy fire equipment operator, was killed while batting another blaze near Yosemite National Park.

The tragic result of this explosion was the death of a bulldozer operator who was battling the blaze.

The Carr Fire in Shasta County has almost tripled in size overnight and is threatening areas west of Redding, Cal Fire said.

Officials emphasized that Yosemite wasn't in imminent danger from the fire, which grew to more than 67 square miles (173 square kilometres) in the adjacent Sierra National Forest. The fire has grown to 4700 acres as of this afternoon and is at 5% containment. These included the Dark Canyon, Black Mountain, Marion Mountain, Boulder Basin and Fern Basin campgrounds; Humber Park; Lake Hemet Picnic Area; Tahquitz Peak Fire Lookout; and Devil's Slide Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail north of Highway 74.

"We're just going to chill out and sleep and pray that we've got a place to go home to", area resident Joey Silva told the Sacramento Bee as he waited in the Shasta College parking lot. "And we're gonna go out on the skycam for you", the anchors said.

Redding hospital has been evacuated - with at least five infants being rushed out and some babies being airlifted to hospitals in Sacramento.

The wildfire in rural Shasta County in Northern California tripled in size overnight with evacuations ordered for the area, Weather.com reports.

He said the hospital was preparing high-risk patients to be evacuated but there were no immediate plans to do so.

California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in Shasta and Riverside Counties on Thursday over the Carr and Cranston fires, which were being supercharged by temperatures above 100 degrees F (37 C), erratic winds and low humidity.

It prompted a large regional response, including 180 personnel from agencies such as the Contra Costa County Fire Protections District among other local agencies, CBS SF BayArea reported.

On Thursday night local time (early morning BST), the fire suddenly exploded, growing more and more out of control.

"FIRE Law Enforcement Officers arrested Brandon N. McGlover, 32 of Temecula for allegedly setting multiple fires in southwest Riverside County on July 25, 2018". In a matter of hours it grew to 7.5 square miles, threatening an estimated 600 homes and forcing the evacuation of Idyllwild, authorities say.
