Now, two of those women are generating major nationwide enthusiasm: 28-year-old Bronx native Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who on June 26 ousted a longtime incumbent when she won the Democratic nomination for Congress in New York's 14th District, and actor and activist Cynthia Nixon, who is running a campaign for governor of NY. Cenk Uygur, and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down.

DeSantis, who is running for governor in Florida, made headlines for referring to "this girl Ocasio-Cortez or whatever she is" during a campaign event in Orange Park, Florida.

The 29-year-old political newcomer, who was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign in 2016, hit back at Desantis on Twitter, clearing up the confusion about "whatever she is" by referencing her Puerto Rican heritage and noting that 75,000 Puerto Ricans had relocated to Florida since Hurricane Maria devastated the USA island territory.

Hemmer then asked DeSantis to respond to Ocasio-Cortez's tweet directly to him explaining that she's Puerto Rican, and DeSantis replied: "I don't care whether she's Puerto Rican, whether she's Anglo-Saxon, I don't care whether she's an Eskimo".

"It's basically Socialism wrapped in ignorance", he said. Sander's socialism is also something of a different breed, one that at least nominally places value on individual rights.

"I want every person to know if you stand next to Ron DeSantis you are anti-woman, bottom line".

Vasquez did not say why DeSantis called Ocasio-Cortez "this girl". It's odd you don't know what that is, given that ...

While joking around with a poster on Twitter, Ocasio-Cortez told that poster that "My identity has been exposed".

Ocasio-Cortez has caused a stir in Democratic politics since her surprise victory. Ben Shapiro of the Daily Wire blasted Ocasio-Cortez's reaction as "intensely stupid".

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, the No. 2 House Democrat, said he had a "good conversation" with Ocasio-Cortez last Thursday when he attempted to rein in her outspoken rhetoric against Democratic incumbents.

"I think it's the future of the party in the Bronx, where she is", Duckworth said in early July. "It was nice to meet her", Gabbard said.
