Social media was quick to criticise DeChambeau for failing to give McEvoy the necessary credit for his win and fellow pro, Eddie Pepperell, took to Twitter to say, 'Has to be said, as far as classless handshakes go, that was a good'n!'

"That's a pretty fantastic feeling and gives me a lot of confidence in the abilities that I can do on a golf course".

McEvoy won his maiden title in style, holing a 20-foot putt for birdie on the 18th to earn a one-stroke victory over John, Renato Paratore and Christofer Blomstrand.

McEvoy parred his remaining holes while DeChambeau birdied the last to retake a share of the lead at 12-under heading into the final day.

"I apologize to Richard McEvoy and the fans for my brevity on 18", he wrote.

Before Sunday he had won three titles on the Challenge Tour but victory at the highest level had eluded him.

The Englishman battled against playing partner and joint overnight leader Bryson DeChambeau for much of the day, until the young American unravelled down the stretch.

Bryson DeChambeau was one over par for his front nine, but dropped five shots in the last four holes, including a triple-bogey eight on the 18th.

McEvoy's final round of 73, which saw him finish on 11 under par, was far from ideal but proved enough to see off his closest rivals.

The 30-year-old finished ahead of several big names in a star-studded field, which included 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed, 2011 Masters victor Charl Schwartzel and rising American star Bryson DeChambeau.
