According to IDC, Samsung shipped 71.5 million shipments for the second quarter of this year, becoming the biggest smartphone brand for this quarter.

Consolidated operating profit stood at 14.87 trillion won (13.3 billion USA dollars) in the April-June quarter, up 5.7 percent from the same period of previous year.

Overall, the company reported $13.3 billion in profit, up 6 percent from the same time a year ago, on $52.1 billion in revenue.

The mobile business booked a 34 percent fall in operating profit to 2.7 trillion won (US$2.4 billion) in the second quarter, its biggest decline since the Galaxy S7 was Samsung's flagship model early past year.

Samsung's fortunes in the mobile market are vital as mobile accounts for about 40 percent of its revenue.

In mobile, demand for high-density storage for new smartphones and high-end models is likely to remain robust. Its semiconductor sector's operating profit will reach 13.57 trillion won and mobile division will post 2.6 trillion won. Revenue was also down 20 percent year on year to 24 trillion won.

Samsung Electronics has unveiled the latest in its flagship 2-in-1 Android tablet line-up, the Galaxy Tab S4, which offers a slew of new options for consumers thanks to it being able to connect with Samsung DeX.

Tesla ended June with about US$2.2 billion in cash on its balance sheet, the least it's carried since the first quarter of 2016. The company said it maintained its targeted level of production, making 5,000 Model 3s in a week multiple times in July.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 isn't expected to make huge waves for its manufacturers.

It could be a possibility that Samsung's budget smartphones are not finding many buyers or company is having afterthoughts about the pricing.

A rise in costs for marketing new models also dealt a blow, the company said.

Samsung itself refrained from forecasting chip market conditions next year, but analysts think rising OLED sales could rescue the company's earnings. Last month, the company launched the same Galaxy J6 as Galaxy On6 in India at a cheaper price. Behind the achievement is the company's past investments, as well as a super cycle in the chip industry that drove profits across the sector.

This is the first time Samsung DeX - which allows the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S9, and Galaxy Note 8 smartphones to be connected to a keyboard, monitor, and mouse to become a "desktop" - is available on a tablet.

"People are doing work differently than they've ever before", Samsung's Alanna Cotton said at a media event today.
