For the April-June quarter, it reported a net profit of 226.4 billion yen, up from 80.9 billion yen from a year earlier. That gain came from the sale of Sony's camera module unit and the receipt of insurance payouts for natural disaster damage.

Annual sales are projected to rise slightly, with operating profit unchanged.

Sales of PlayStation 4 products were doing "better than expected" as a result of popular gaming titles, Yasuo Imanaka, an analyst at Rakuten Securities in Tokyo, said before the results were announced. It kept its profit forecast for the year ending March at 670 billion yen, down 9 percent on year, citing various risks including competition in smartphones.

This is stark contrast to April this year, when the company's Chief Executive Officer Kenichiro Yoshida gave a rather pessimistic forecast for the full year, which sent Sony's shares plunging. Right now, PlayStation Plus subscribers is holding steady with 33.9 million users. Additionally, the trivia game Knowledge is Power is also free this month, with the title requiring players to use a mobile device and Sony's PlayLink app to experience it. To that end, Sony has been expanding businesses promising stable revenue streams, such as online gaming services and music content libraries, while minimizing the impact of the volatile sales cycles of game consoles and other electronics gadgets. "How much the new games added to profit growth this quarter is important to gauge the rest of the year". Sony also has an exclusive Spider-Man game coming out in September, which is expected to do well. The company also raised its operating profit forecast by 32%.

California wildfires scorch an area the size of Los Angeles
There are more than 32,000 people still evacuated across the state and almost 300,000 acres actively burning. In General the current forest fires were the sixth-scale destruction in the history of California.

Sales figures as astronomical as 75 million in almost 5 years earns the PS4 the title of most popular gaming console in the world...ever!

Quite surprisingly, 20 million of those sales occurred in the company's last financial year, firmly reminding other competitors (such as Nintendo (OTC:NTDOY)) that Sony is still king of the gaming world.

With the previous year's one-time gain of 36.8 billion yen excluded, Sony logged even sharper first-quarter growth of 61 per cent.
