The 39-year-old admitted the 100-page charge sheet was accurate, except for a few minor details, saying that he had put pressure on his girlfriend to allow her son to be raped and abused by men they found online.

Eight people were arrested back in January after German police uncovered a paedophile ring in which the mother had been selling her 8-year-old boy for sex in and around the area of Freiburg. Prosecutors say it was partly due to her relationship with her partner.

The 48-year-old was sentenced to twelve and a half years in prison, while her partner, a 39-year-old convicted paedophile was sentenced to 12 years.

In a case that horrified Germany, the defendant Javier Gonzalez Diaz was convicted by the regional court in Freiburg of "14 counts of aggravated sexual assault, one count of rape and one count of bodily harm while making child pornography", judge Stefan Buergelin said. It ruled that the man must remain in preventive custody after serving his sentence.

They charged several thousand euros for each instance of abuse, filmed the acts and posted them on the darknet.

In May 2015, the couple started abusing the woman's son, with the man at first offering the child cash.

The US Department of Justice has said more than $4bn was misappropriated by high-level officials from the fund and their associates.

Five other men have also been prosecuted in connection with the abuse.

The couple distributed videos of the sexual abuse across the dark net, selling it for large sums of money.

The couple was also ordered to pay 42,500 euros ($49,200) in damages to the boy and another victim, a girl.

The mother's partner was supposed to be banned from having contact with children following his earlier abuse conviction.

Officials took the boy away from his mother in March past year following vague indications from police that he might be at risk, but a local court sent him back weeks later on condition that she not allow any contact between the child and her partner.
