Trump insists Trump Tower meeting 'totally legal'

The Washington Post reported on Sunday that Mr Trump has been brooding in private about whether his son unintentionally put himself in legal jeopardy by meeting with Ms Veselnitskaya. Federal campaign finance law makes it illegal for a campaign to accept a "thing of value", such as a financial contribution, from foreign nationals. Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied that members of his campaign colluded with the Russians.

Here's how the accounts about the infamous meeting have evolved.

And if you're Robert Mueller and you're looking at whether Trump obstructed justice, you've now got even more evidence of a clear attempt to mislead the public and obscure the truth.

One part of the inquiry has focussed on a June 9, 2016, meeting at Trump Tower in NY between Donald Jr., other campaign aides and a group of Russians.

Trump initially claimed that the Trump Tower meeting was about nothing more than "adoptions" - which is a frequent euphemism in U.S./Russian affairs for repeal of the Magnitsky Act. The statement soon proved to be incomplete.

The Trump Tower meeting was arranged by British music promoter, Rob Goldstone, who told Donald Jr that he had "information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father". "I did not know about it". He also released the email exchange that brought about the meeting. He also claimed that the election was not discussed at all during the meeting. "However, remember the Supreme Court that we have". The Magnitsky Act placed sanctions on Russia, which retaliated by banning the adoption of Russian children by Americans. Five killed, dozens shot in Chicago 'violent night'
Giuliani falsely stated that there were "63 murders" in Chicago this weekend, despite the reports that 63 were wounded and 11 killed.

Trump downplayed the meeting on July 13, 2017, saying most people would have taken the meeting. Trump's lawyers - who are not in favor of any interview despite the President saying he wants to set the record straight with special counsel - are seeking to limit the interview to collusion topics.

The lawyer told Stephanopoulos that discussions over whether the president should sit for an interview with Mueller are "ongoing".

Trump campaign officials sat down in June 2016 with a Kremlin-linked lawyer who promised dirt campaign rival Hillary Clinton.

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow told ABC News' George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" Sunday that he has no knowledge of the president's son being a target of Mueller's probe. "He was coming back from the G-20".

It was later reported that was false and the president was involved in constructing his son's misleading statement. Is he hearing the message that we heard from [DNI Dan] Coats and [FBI Director Christopher] Wray and others in that press conference at the White House, or is hearing the message of the president of the United States? He said he was not aware of Trump Jr. facing any legal exposure. Trump's lawyers acknowledged in a letter to Mueller's team in January 2018 that Trump dictated the response, according to the Times.

"I made a mistake in my statement", he said. Sekulow said this past weekend that he had been acting on "bad information" at the time.
