Kovacic has signed for Chelsea on a season-long loan but there is no option to buy, with Real Madrid looking for the midfielder to return to them next year. But the club has been linked with a new goalkeeper in most recent transfer windows, and tried to sign David De Gea from Manchester United in 2015 only to miss the deadline.

Athletic Club lost one of their own on Wednesday night as Kepa Arrizabalaga joined Chelsea, and the young Spaniard penned a farewell letter to the Bilbao club.

"He is very happy that I am here because he knows how important it was for me to come to Real Madrid", Courtois said.

"Certainly after this World Cup I can decide if I want to stay or go, but Chelsea will make the final decision - if they want to let me go".

Luka Modric returned to training at Real Madrid on Wednesday along with five other World Cup players, against a background of contradictory rumours about his future. After advancing into the senior squad in 2012 his rise was steady rather than spectacular.

"In terms of the price, it's something I don't think about", Kepa said via a translator.

The 40-year-old Italian, who this summer left Juventus to join Paris St-Germain, was purchased for 53m euros by Juve from Parma on 3 July 2001.
