Pence said Russia, China and other nations hostile to the United States were "weaponizing space", pointing to their efforts to develop satellite-killing rockets and weaponry.

"Our adversaries have transformed space into a war-fighting domain already, and the United States will not shrink from this challenge", Pence said.

Mattis has endorsed plans to reorganize the military's space forces and create a new command, but had previously opposed launching an expensive separate new service. As NPR noted at the time, " a new branch of the military can only be established by an act of Congress - something that hasn't happened since the Air Force was split from the Army in 1947.

Trump himself chimed in with a short tweet reading "Space Force all the way!" And he said that "we are going to have the Air Force, and we are going to have the Space Force - separate but equal".

On Thursday, Mattis said "space is one of our vital national interests" and is "no longer a new domain".

The Space Operations Force will "train, promote, and retain personnel to include engineers, scientists, intelligence experts, operators, strategists, and others", reported ABC.

The Pentagon report, however, included a plan to create a unified combatant command, known as the U.S. Space Command, by the end of 2018, according to a copy reviewed by Reuters.

Their remarks were timed to coincide with the release of a Pentagon report outlining the steps needed to create a Space Force, something it does not have the power to do on its own.

He warned about developments made by Russian Federation and China claiming that "hypersonic" weapons were nearly a reality.

Speaking to an audience at the Pentagon, as he set out more details about the proposal, vice-president Mike Pence said: "The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of our armed forces". Several steps must be taken to establish the space-centered military branch. "Next February in the president's budget, we will call on the Congress to marshal the resources we need to stand up".

In 2007, China blew up a dead weather satellite with a missile, creating a massive debris cloud in orbit. "We must have American dominance in space".

Pence said that President Trump will request $8 billion over the next five years to support military operations in space. "Both nations are also investing heavily in hypersonic missiles that are created to fly up to 5 miles per second and at such low altitudes that they could evade detection by our missile-defense radars". "But we built that architecture in space at a time when it was benign".

The United States is a member of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which bars the stationing of weapons of mass destruction in space and only allows for the use of the moon and other celestial bodies for peaceful purposes.
