United Approach Atletico Over Signing Of Diego Godin

Godin appears settled in Spain and ESPN suggest the South American is more likely to sign a new contract at the Metropolitano Stadium than to push for a late move to Old Trafford during the closing stages of the window.

It hasn't been for a lack of interest in other players either with United fans teased by a multitude of transfers rumours ranging from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Gareth Bale.

Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld, Leicester's Harry Maguire, Barcelona's Yerry Mina and Bayern Munich's Jerome Boateng have all been pursued this summer.

With this in mind, a move for the 32-year-old Uruguayan global would make sense.

However, it was Diego Godin who attracted the headlines on Deadline Day when Sky Sports broke the story that United had made an approach for the Atletico Madrid defender.

Now that the Godin deal has fallen through, it looks like United won't be signing any new central defenders before this evening's 5pm deadline - a position Jose Mourinho has seen as a priority to strengthen.

Israel kills two Hamas gunmen in Gaza, sides dispute circumstances
The strikes came after two fighters from the military wing of Hamas, which rules Gaza, were killed by Israeli fire on Tuesday. Two pregnant women were also taken to Barzilai Medical Center after they went into labor as a result of the stress.

It seems Man Utd have also made an audacious attempt to sign Godin as ESPN are one of several outlets reporting they have made it clear to Atletico Madrid they are willing to meet the defender's £18m release clause.

The Portuguese has made three signings this summer - Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant - but has so far been frustrated in his search for a centre-back.

You've got to feel for United supporters right now.

Godin is considered one of the finest defenders on the planet.

The 55-year-old said: "The market closes today".
