The key stretch came when Hall made three birdies in four holes beginning at the 13th and took a one-stroke lead when she rolled in a 20-foot birdie putt at the 16th.

Trailing Phatlum by a shot overnight, the 22-year-old from Bournemouth held her nerve as the pair traded birdies in a compelling contest that effectively turned in to matchplay on the back nine.

She said: "I saw so many little girls come out, three or four-year-olds just wanting a picture with me".

His daughter was born during the 1996 Masters won by English golfer Nick Faldo at Augusta, Georgia, and she was named as a tribute to that victory.

Hall played safe in three-putting from distance in front of Royal Lytham's storied clubhouse and celebrated her first win on the LPGA Tour.

That mid-range putt earned her the solo lead as well at 18 under.

Hall joined Laura Davies (four), Alison Nicholas and Stupples as women's major winners from England.

Home favourite Georgia Hall shot a near-perfect five under par final round to claim the Women's British Open title.

At the age of 22, Hall - who finished tied for third at last year's Open - managed to record a first major title win and become just the fourth English victor of the tournament.

The mother's partner was supposed to be banned from having contact with children following his earlier abuse conviction. They charged several thousand euros for each instance of abuse, filmed the acts and posted them on the darknet.

Hall sealed a two-shot victory thanks to a final-round 67 at the famous Lancashire links venue, a place where golfing legends, Bobby Jones, Tony Jacklin, Gary Player and Seve Ballesteros have all sealed Open Championship glory.

Behind Phatlum in the lead, two-time major victor So Yeon-Ryu from South Korea is third, while Japan's Marmiko Higa is in a tie for fourth. "I try to plan every shot, every hole". "I'm so happy she won". Hall averaged 28 putts per round and was seven-for-seven in sand saves.

"I just had to stay calm and patient". I've gotta go out there tomorrow and try to play my best and maybe be a little bit more aggressive than I had been going.

"I was very confident going into this event from previous year (equal third) and I love links golf and I'm playing in England, which is very rare".

Sports Minister Tracey Crouch praised Hall's performance, saying: "Congratulations to Georgia Hall on winning her first major in what was an incredible performance".

★ Now her Cinderella story is set to inspire other young sportspeople wanting to get a taste of world-class action.

Champions - Kenny Perry won the 3M Championship one last time, closing with a 3-under 69 for a three-stroke victory in the event that is being replaced by the PGA Tour's 3M Open.

"He texted me last night and said: 'Go Georgia, hit the fairways and greens and make your fair share of putts, I'm pulling for you.' It's great to have him as a friend", Hall said.

Playing in the final group with Rory McIlroy, the 25-year-old Thomas never let anyone closer than two shots of the lead.
