Schuette and Whitmer - both veteran officeholders - easily bested their opponents in Tuesday's primary to set up their head-to-head race to succeed Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, who reached his term limit. Schuette - an ally of President Donald Trump - easily defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, conservative state Sen.

Their victories, reported by The Associated Press, set up deep ideological clashes in state's most prominent general election races in November.

"Why don't we talk about the cost of reduced productivity because of people who need to go on disability, because of people who are not able to participate in our economy because they are having issues like diabetes or they don't have access to the health care that they need?" she added. "I am proud of our state". It would be a first for either party in MI and is part of the broader surge in women running for office - mostly as Democrats - since the election of President Donald Trump. Voters were also choosing primary candidates in Missouri and Washington.

Fred Woodhams, a spokesman for the MI secretary of state's office, said Tuesday's turnout was "drastically higher" than in past primaries, approaching 2.2 million voters.

She said even Republican-leaning women in Oakland County north of Detroit are volunteering for her campaign.

In the frantic closing days, Whitmer campaigned with union leaders, members of the state's Democratic congressional delegation and Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who said she is the party's best chance to retake the governorship in November. He beat out the three other candidates with about 50 percent of the vote.

When asked if he was happy for City to be favourites, he said: "Since nine years I live with that situation, it's no problem". The early summer transfer deadline in the Premier League sparked a drop in spending for the first time since 2010.

On the Republican side, the results again reinforced how Trump has refashioned the party in his own image while playing an influential role in many primary races.

Bernie Sanders and upstart NY congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to boost Democrat Abdul El-Sayed, who lost to Whitmer.

"It's not totally predictive, but I think it's a very good sign that we're going to have an engaged, excited Democratic electorate turning out in November", said Dillon, whose party has struggled with turnout in past midterm elections.

Schuette also thanked his competitors in the Republican party for their commitment to the state and their service to MI.

Crowds outside the GOP rally were not that large, much smaller than what President Trump has drawn in West Michigan.
