Mahrez bent an effort just wide of the post as he looked to mark his Premier League debut for the champions with a goal with City taking nearly complete control of proceedings leading up to the interval.

Not a single image of Unai Emery adorns the place and even the one of him inside the stadium, beside a legend which states: "To the next chapter", takes some finding.

There was much debate prior to today on who will be the centre back pairing with Pep Guardiola confirming a more youthful option of John Stones and Aymeric Laporte over captain Vincent Kompany and Nicolas Otamendi.

"My main thing is to start the Premier League, the cup, the Europa League and then my objective is to improve each player with their qualities and our work with them".

The new manager, the Telegraph said, confirmed that Laurent Koscielny, now out injured, would be his main captain, but that he would be backed up by Petr Cech, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's movement was excellent, particularly when drifting right, but he simply wasn't found often enough.

The France striker injected more urgency into Arsenal's attacks and sent an effort just wide only moments after coming on. "He is a smart, intelligent, well-prepared manager, so he will know exactly what to do".

Alisson set for debut against West Ham United
The central defensive area is a bit of an issue for Klopp and Liverpool . I don't want to forget anybody but they are all ambitious. It is really hard , but it's not only hard for us.

Games against Man City and Chelsea in the opening two weeks of the new season are strong tests for Emery and his players but it will be a good chance to get an early glimpse of what his team will be made of this campaign. It included two Premier League fixtures and a League Cup final.

This leaves the versatile Welbeck, who plays on the left-wing or up front for England, happy to fill in where he is needed for this Arsenal side.

Arsenal's main concern going into the weekend will be the fitness of Aaron Ramsey.

Koscielny is expected to return from a long-term Achilles injury in November.

However, it is unlikely that David Silva will take part as the Spaniard missed the Community Shield win over Chelsea and is a doubt for Sunday's game.

Emery has clearly placed a big emphasis upon playing out from defence, but goalkeeper Petr Cech - slightly surprisingly preferred over newcomer Bernd Leno - looked consistently nervous at goal kicks, at one point hopelessly scuffing a simple pass backwards, nearly into his own net. The new goalkeeper from Bayer Leverkusen might get the nod for his superior ability to play with the ball at his feet - a prerequisite against a team like City.
