Five-times major champion Mickelson arrived at the PGA Championship 10th in the standings, and did not even come close to making the halfway cut, shooting four-over-par 144 to miss out by four strokes at Bellerive.

For the third round in succession Woods looked set to bogey the hard par-four 10th hole, which plays as a par five for the members, when he could only hack out from heavy rough to the right of the fairway.

So much for Woods being exhausted after all that exertion he has expended this year in returning from three back operations.

In only one of Woods' 14 major titles did he come from as far back as six shots with 36 holes remaining - the 2005 Masters. "I was hitting a lot of drivers. I bogeyed the last, but sometimes when you have bad shots, you're going to make bogey".

What was particularly encouraging for the 14-time major victor was the fact that some of his best swings came late in the day, including a bullet four iron to the par five 17th that set up a presentable eagle chance.

The 48-year-old lefthander, a fixture on American Ryder Cup squads since his 1995 debut, fired a one-over par 71 to stand on four-over for 36 holes, four strokes beyond the cut line at Bellerive Country Club.

"I feel like I'm pretty good about bouncing back, " Finau said.

He sits five shots back of clubhouse leader Gary Woodland, who maintained his place atop the leaderboard with a 66 elevating him to 10 under and one shot ahead of fellow American Kevin Kisner (64).

China exports accelerated in July despite rise in US tariffs
Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said it must retaliate against the USA tariffs "to defend the nation's dignity". LNG exports are secured on long-term contacts, so the impact will be fairly limited until the deals expire.

The feat has never been culminated at a PGA but it has been completed at Bellerive - South Africa's Player when he won the 1965 US Open. "I kind of said last night I felt like there was a 65 in the way I was playing and just have to do it".

Koepka, who started on the back nine, birdied the par-5 eighth and had a 20-foot birdie putt at the ninth for 62 but rolled it three feet past and made the comeback to shoot 63.

Only a three-putt bogey at the fifth hole halted his progress, though he put the setback quickly behind him to birdie the next three holes.

Asked what Furyk's reaction to all the birdies was, Finau said, "He didn't say anything, but he was just shaking his head". But after the first three rounds of this event and really the entire season Woods has strung together, it doesn't much matter if he gets it. "Who knows? If I had the answer to it, I would give it to you, but I really don't know".

Woods, however, lamented two bogeys that were the result of makeable par putts from the 5-foot range.

While overnight rain softened the course even more, it also made it play long, leading to several lengthy approaches.

Two holes later, Johnson drove into a fairway bunker but got up-and-down from 86 yards for par.
