Dershowitz: 'Less Bad' For McGahn to Testify Than for Trump To

The White House's top lawyer has cooperated extensively with the special counsel investigating Russian interference in the 2016 USA election, sharing detailed accounts about the episodes at the heart of the inquiry into whether President Donald Trump obstructed justice, The New York Times reported on Saturday.

Mueller is investigating whether the president sought to obstruct justice as well as whether his campaign colluded with Russia's covert effort to sway the 2016 presidential election in Trump's favor.

Sources told the Times that McGahn has had three voluntary interviews with Mueller's team totaling 30 hours.

By contrast, Mr. Trump said, "I allowed White House Counsel Don McGahn, and all other requested members of the White House Staff, to fully cooperate with the Special Counsel".

McGahn's attorney William Burck added in a statement: "President Trump, through counsel, declined to assert any privilege over Mr. McGahn's testimony, so Mr. McGahn answered the Special Counsel team's questions fulsomely and honestly, as any person interviewed by federal investigators must". No Collusion, No Obstruction.

Trump's former personal lawyer, John Dowd, told Reuters on Saturday he was aware McGahn had spoken extensively with Mueller's team.

President Trump's authorization of full cooperation was done when it was the White House's goal to conclude the Mueller investigation as quickly as possible.

Special counsel Robert Mueller is investigating whether President Trump's campaign team colluded with Russian Federation to influence the outcome of the presidential election.

While Trump believes McGahn is not loyal enough, McGahn has called the president "King Kong" behind his back because of his temper tantrums, the Times is reporting.

Trump emphasized that he authorized his aides to cooperate with Mueller.

The New York Times said in its report that it was rare for a lawyer to be so open with investigators, but he may have been motivated out of fear of prosecution over White House decisions that might have been construed as obstructing justice.

Rudy Giuliani, part of Mr. Trump's legal team, said on Saturday that Mr. McGahn's cooperation with Mr. Mueller was part of a legal strategy.

While McGahn says he never saw Trump go beyond his legal authorities, The New York Times says he gave investigators a mix of information both "damaging and favorable" to the president.

In his first live TV interview since being stripped of his security clearance, Brennan said on MSNBC late Friday that Trump's is " drunk with power", and rapped Republican lawmakers in Congress for turning a blind eye to the president's actions.
