McCain previous year was diagnosed with glioblastoma, the same aggressive cancer that had felled his friend, Sen.

McCain reportedly spent the previous year of his life planning his own funeral, CNN reported Saturday night.

Hillary Clinton said of the late senator: "He was a tough politician, a trusted colleague, and there will simply never be another like him" while Maxine Waters tweeted, "A true American patriot & hero has passed".

What did McCain's family say?

John McCain is remembered for defending his opponent Barack Obama as a "decent family man" during the 2008 presidential campaign. Additionally, his courage, perseverance and ability to overcome adversity, in every facet of his life, will continue to inspire us all. One of his rescuers said many years later that McCain was well treated after being pulled from the lake by villagers.

"Senator McCain was a man of principle who dedicated his life to the service of his country".

"I never met him personally, but from afar respected the man for what he stood for and who he was", Edwards said.

"At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 60 years".

Following his 2008 presidential loss, McCain exercised his influence as the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee to support military intervention in the Syrian Civil War and in 2013 became the first USA senator to visit Syrian rebels. Our country owes a lot to John McCain and we will greatly miss him.

Pompeo calls on Pakistan's Khan to act against 'terrorists'
In his first tweet of the year, Trump said that the U.S. had "foolishly" given Pakistan $33bn in aid over 15 years. Pakistan refuted the State Department statement that terrorism was discussed during the call.

He was "one of the most principled people I've ever known", Brown said.

He served in the US Navy as a fighter pilot and became a prisoner of war in North Vietnam in 1967.

McCain was cleared of wrongdoing in 1991 but the Senate Ethics Committee rebuked him for poor judgment. No stranger to controversy, McCain was a staunch supporter of President George W Bush's invasion of Iraq in 2003 and his choice of Sarah Palin as running mate in his unsuccessful bid for the White House in 2008 is now seen as a harbinger of the tide of rightwing populism he came to resist.

Rep. John McCain in his office on Capitol Hill, Feb. 15, 1990. "My prayers go out to Senator McCain's friends, family, and constituents during this time - you are in our hearts".

McCain's military pedigree and independent streak won respect during the race but his choice of the unqualified Palin as running mate - apparently created to appeal to Christian evangelicals who deserted him in 2000 - damaged his credibility. He had battled brain cancer. A source close to McCain who asked not to be identified said Friday the senator was at his Arizona ranch with his family.

The veteran U.S. Senator, whose most recent indelible mark was made with the silent downturn of his thumb on the Senate floor to signal his refusal to help repeal the Affordable Care Act, has died.

McCain had an unsuccessful run for president as a self-styled maverick Republican in 2008 but lost to Democrat Barack Obama, who went on to become the first black U.S. president.

McCain, the son and grandson of US Navy admirals, was elected to the US House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 after more than two decades of Navy service. Shortly before Election Day in 2016, McCain said he's rather cast his vote for another Republican, someone who's "qualified to be president". Thank you Senator McCain for your service to the nation. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Cindy, and all the McCain family during this time", Mr Morrison tweeted on Sunday. The pair ultimately lost to Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
