Our country owes a lot to John McCain and we will greatly miss him. The American Legion was among those who criticized the White House lapse and urged that the flag be lowered.

Mr McCain, 81, died on Saturday surrounded by loved ones after a brain tumour battle, a statement released by his office confirmed.

"I have asked Vice President Mike Pence to offer an address at the ceremony honoring Senator McCain at the United States Capitol this Friday".

The President also said he had agreed to the McCain family's request for military transportation of Senator McCain's remains from Arizona to Washington.

Trump also said that Chief of Staff John Kelly, Secretary of Defense James Mattis and National Security Adviser John Bolton will represent the White House at McCain's services.

The American flag files at half-staff at the White House, Monday, Aug. 27, 2018, in Washington.

President Donald Trump has long feuded with McCain, and is reportedly not invited to his funeral.

Renaming the Russell Senate Office Building for the late Senator John McCain is a nice gesture - but an empty one, as long as President Trump's politics of pettiness and division continue to poison the country.

"I doubt you could find a comparable situation where the president doesn't order the flag flown at half-mast until the funeral", said John Lawrence, history professor at the University of California's Washington Center.

I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same period at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities overseas, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations. Anything beyond that would require a presidential proclamation.

Trump and McCain had a bitter relationship that lasted through McCain's final days.

The Richmond man, and former naval aviator, spent five and a half years with McCain has a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. He then served in the U.S. Congress for more than three decades.

President Donald Trump ordered the flag flying above the White House re-lowered to half-mast on Monday as a sign of respect for Sen. Noting McCain's death, several candidates, including Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema and Republican Rep. Martha McSally, who are expected to win their party's races for the state's other U.S. Senate seat, on Sunday evening said they would suspend their campaigns on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mr. Trump's initial silence about Mr. McCain underscored the isolation of the USA leader and fueled criticism that he is incapable of bringing a divided nation together even as it mourns a man widely seen as an American hero and a political icon. Former Vice President Joe Biden is now slated to speak.
