United States ex-senator Jon Kyl named as successor to McCain

He spent three terms in the Senate, working with McCain, and was minority whip, the first Arizona politician to earn that position.

"I want to watch the hawks hunt from the sycamore, and then take my leave bound for a place near my old friend Chuck Larson, in the cemetery on the Severn [River], back where it began", he wrote in a memoir published earlier this year.

"This is not the time for newcomers, and it's not the time for on-the-job training", said Ducey, stating that Kyl's experience will serve the state of Arizona. "Sen. Kyl is prepared to hit the ground running". By state law the senator will have to be a member of the same party as the departing one, in this case the GOP.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.

Without naming Trump, McCain's daughter, Bush and Obama all rebuked Trump, who feuded with the late senator and mocked his military service, which included 5-1/2 years as a prisoner during the Vietnam War. "Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and college of so many years".

He served alongside McCain for almost two decades before retiring in 2013, and served as senate minority whip during his service, making him a key Republican leader.

Kyl is sure to give Republicans a reliable vote for GOP policies.

Pallbearers included USA defense secretary James Mattis; rear admiral and former naval academy superintendent Thomas Lynch; Admiral John Richardson; and two men - Everett Alvarez Jr. and Jon Fer - who were prisoners of war in Vietnam along with McCain.

In her remarks on Saturday, McCain contrasted her father's legacy with Trump's rhetoric, saying, "The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again, because America was always great". Whether Kyl serves for just months or through 2020 he will nearly certainly serve as a placeholder, setting up what will likely be a contested race in 2020 in the GOP-leaning but purple-trending state.

The flag-draped coffin holding McCain's body was flown to Washington, D.C., aboard Air Force Two, the plane reserved for the vice president.

Most people seemed to have believed that the couple should have sat this one out, using the hashtag #funeralcrashers to express their disdain.

She's now locked in a tough campaign against Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema for the Senate seat Flake is vacating. She endorsed the appointment on Twitter.
