Ms. Pressley, the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council, challenged Mr. Capuano from the left and on style and identity, in a pattern similar to the upset victory of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez earlier this summer in NY.

In nearby Connecticut, Jahana Hayes is on track to become that state's first black woman to win a congressional seat if she prevails in November. She says Lynch didn't do enough to oppose President Donald Trump.

Rep. Stephen F. Lynch easily won his Democratic primary Tuesday in his bid for a ninth full term.

Other Massachusetts Democratic incumbents held off challengers.

Capuano told supporters "America is going to be OK" and said Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman.

The race between Capuano and Pressley was perhaps the most closely watched contest in MA, especially since Pressley drew comparisons to Ocasio-Cortez.

During the campaign, Capuano touted his credentials as an "unabashed liberal", but he found himself competing with Pressley over who was the more progressive candidate.

Besides, this wouldn't be the first time that the Powers That Be at NBC News ignored or squashed reports of abusive, powerful men. McHugh's scathing criticism comes amid a report Thursday that NBC's general counsel threatened Farrow over the Weinstein story.

Capuano conceded defeat to Pressley in the race to represent Massachusetts' 7th District approximately 90 minutes after the polls closed.

Pressley challenged Capuano, who has been in Congress since 1998, from the left, and the race drew comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's upset victory over Congressman Joe Crowley - particularly after Ocasio-Cortez endorsed Pressley.

"These times demanded more from our leaders and from our party". Still, Pressley joins Ocasio-Cortez in New York, Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Andrew Gillum in Florida in the ranks of progressive, non-white politicians who represent demographic change and perspective in the Democratic Party.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, cheered the outcome on Twitter on Tuesday night.

Ayanna Pressley is heading to the US Congress in the latest remarkable upset in this year's primaries in advance of the November midterm elections.

Baker, a moderate who has been popular with voters in what is perceived as one of the nation's bluest states, will face Gonzalez, who served as secretary of administration and finance under Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick. "We believe that people in public life can, and should, debate the issues respectfully and seek common ground whenever possible".
