Chrome 69 is out, includes many functional and security changes

Google Chrome has just turned 10 years old. Now, more than 1bn people use the browser.

Available now by updating to version 69, this new version of Chrome delivers change in areas that are increasingly important for today's users, that weren't as important a decade ago.

On the desktop also, Chrome 69 takes a full-fledged Material design as we get to see lighter shades and rounded tabs and bars.

We're anticipating some major upgrades when Chrome OS 70 hits sometime in early October but in the meantime, the Chrome team over at Google is giving desktop and mobile users a reason to join in on the browser's 10th birthday. The Chrome search box ("Omnibox") also gives you more information directly as you type. If you let your little dino run into one, he'll don a birthday hat and keep on trucking. If you don't see this button, you're on the latest version. Both of those announcements should be welcome; supporting the developer community is one of the best ways for Google to make sure Chrome doesn't become a bloated mess that can't perform as well as competitive browsers.

On mobile, open the iOS App Store or Google Play store to update the app. Google has adopted its Material Design 2 philosophy to give the browser an all-new design, which is a welcome move.

In general, the new design of Google Chrome features more rounded corners, new icons, and a whiter color palette. Chrome's interface no longer interweaves them around each other, making each tab much easier to pick out.

Plus, there are customisable options, too. Chrome is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an entirely new aesthetic, which brings tweaked browser tabs, a customizable New Tab page, and a revamped suggestions menu, among other things. You can now get answers to your questions directly inside the Omnibox, without having to navigate to a website.

This includes rich results on public figures or sporting events, to instant answers like the local weather. Soon, you'll be also able to search files from your Google Drive from the Omnibox.

The first thing you'll notice when using the new version of Chrome is its refreshed design, which reflects the company's Material Design principles. This password will then be saved in the built-in password manager so that it automatically fills in the account credentials for sites that you visit.

They are also rolling out a set of new experiments to improve Chrome's startup time, latency, usage of memory, and usability and there's a significant improvement in the the way Chrome handles passwords.

"Many of the reports mention that this also affect the UI so we're likely looking at a Skia or Chrome side change", a Google engineer wrote in the official bug report, suggesting a possible cause for the issue.
