Majerhat Flyover Partially Collapses, One Person Reportedly Dead

A massive rescue operation is underway to save people trapped in the debris.

The IIT-Kharagpur report had stated that the design of the flyover was faulty and there was lack of use of proper construction material, faulty design approval and wrongful project execution by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).

Traffic from various parts of South 24 Parganas and Behala area in the city were being diverted from Diamond Park area, the officer said. He said, "We have called in the cranes, let them pull up the debris, however, as per information, no one else is trapped under the debris".

A flyover in Kolkata has collapsed.

Banerjee said she will visit the site on Wednesday cutting short her tour.

Additional lighting arrangements have been made to facilitate the rescue work at night.

The immediate priority is rescue. "This is a crime and no one, whoever is held negligent, will be spared", Banerjee said a press briefing in Darjeeling today.

Several people are feared trapped after a portion of the Majerhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday, police said. "I pray that those who are injured recover at the earliest", he wrote on Twitter.

Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi visited the area.

"However, all the pedestrians and passengers in the public and private vehicles could be rescued". It is a big disaster. There was a report on a pit here for quite some time, I don't know whether PWD noted it. PWD and Railway administration had the responsibility to maintain it. "The matter required to be enquired", he told reporters.

Some locals said the collapse might have been due to the construction of metro railway pillars nearby but this was not immediately confirmed by the experts.

Following Majerhat bridge collapse, West Bengal minister Firhad Hakim said no casualty was reported so far in the incident.
