Tiger Woods chosen as Ryder Cup wild card

It is a feather in our cap to have him on our side'.

Woods, who has not played a Ryder Cup since 2012, revealed that he had set himself the target of making the United States team at the start of the season. "And I'll say that every single time", said DeChambeau, who led by as many as four strokes during a steamy final round before closing with a 67. To have the honour to play again is beyond special.

Smith began his move with a birdie on the 10, and when he made back-to-back birdies on the 15 and 16 holes, he was suddenly within one of DeChambeau.

"The three here made it probably a little easier day than for most captains, " Furyk said at a press conference in West Conshohocken, Pa. "Bryson really separated himself and put an exclamation point on things".

"I'd love to be on that team".

'It is a great challenge and a strong challenge because we know how well the European team plays at home'. As the year progressed I have gained some traction and was somehow able to get some high finishes.

Furyk will round out his team by naming a 12th player on Monday morning, following the final round of the BMW Championship. His last time overseas was at Gleneagles, where he infamously closed out a losing press conference by questioning captain Tom Watson and the direction the PGA of America was taking the US team.

But he was given rather more trouble by American #3 Steve Johnson. "He is young and has plenty of time to win tournaments". He looked done from the start, losing 16 of the first 21 points in a set that took only 24 minutes for Thiem to claim.

Casey was not eligible for the 2016 fixture after declining to renew his European Tour membership, but he is back in the team for the first time since 2008, while Stenson has been passed fit to play in his fifth Ryder Cup following an elbow injury.

"I'm excited to have him on the team. It's great to have him be a part of it".

The biennial competition will take place at the Le Golf National near Paris from 28-30 September.

Mickelson said ending that long U.S. wait for a victory in Europe was his prime motivation.

Woods was already set to go to Paris as a vice captain, but Furyk said he'll select someone else for that role so the 42-year-old can focus on playing.

"I wanted to experience it", he explained.

"It's a wonderful chance to do something that I haven't done in my career and would very much like to". Finau and DeChambeau were viewed as 50-50 possibilities, before each performed well in the first two FedEx Cup Playoff events - with DeChambeau winning both tournaments and Finau finishing second in The Northern Trust in New Jersey and tying for fourth in the Dell Technologies Championship in MA.
