Luke Shaw allayed concerns over his well-being after sustaining a sickening-looking injury that overshadowed England's UEFA Nations League opener against Spain.

But Spain, featuring only five of the players that started their last-16 World Cup penalty shootout defeat by Russian Federation, hit back before halftime through Saul Niguez and Rodrigo.

Even during their morale-boosting run in Russian Federation, manager Southgate warned there was still work to do and the performance at Wembley underlined that message.

England will look to recover from three straight defeats when they face Switzerland on Tuesday night.

England manager Gareth Southgate named his squad last week and made some surprises by recalling the likes of Adam Lallana and Danny Welbeck.

Southgate said he was unsure whether his side could close the gap to the top teams before the next European Championship, in which the semi-finals and final will be played at Wembley. "He's a big part of our team".

US Open: sweat stops play
The Serbian won only four of 20 break points against an opponent whose surprise run has been one of the stories of the tournament. American player Nicole Gibbs told CNN a year ago that she'd first started receiving online abuse while playing college tennis.

That extra man playing in a central/defensive midfield role with inside forwards supporting Harry Kane upfront provides a better balance than the current formation - and with one clean sheet in seven games, a change of system is something that has been much needed for a long time. The match is the first for either in the Nations League (as explained here) and it features some of the Premier League's top players going up against many of La Liga's stars.

Southgate plans to rotate his side at the King Power Stadium in Leicester and intends to bring in reinforcements from the Under-21s squad.

In-form Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has also been re-called but the Three Lions will be without Jamie Vardy and Gary Cahill who have both announced their retirement from global football.

"It is not a concern", he said. We are still at the early stages of what we want to do.

"We knew it was going to be a hard game".

Rashford's frustration got the better of him prior to the worldwide break.
