Abortion opponents hope he'll be a vote to uphold additional restrictions on the procedure and even possibly overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision that established a constitutional right to an abortion.

The Senate's Republican majority is thought to offer a clear path for Kavanaugh's confirmation to the high court, where he is expected to provide a decisive conservative vote on explosive issues like abortion and same-sex marriage.

Likewise, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent who ran for the Democratic nomination in 2016, and former Vice President Joe Biden, who is also weighing a 2020 campaign, have been in touch with Iowa Democrats but have not yet made plans to visit.

"I have to tell you that despite the embarrassing display by many Senate Democrats in the Judiciary Committee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh showed the intellect, the temperament, the judicial philosophy that I believe should generate broad-based support in the United States Senate", Pence said.

The GOP now has 51 votes in the senate, so losing one would result in a tie to be decided by Vice President Mike Pence. She said they noticed that staffers who were fielding calls about Kavanaugh were telling callers that they were taking down the message and passing it along to the senator without actually writing anything down or typing into the computer.

Collins has previously said she would oppose any Supreme Court nominee who "demonstrates hostility" toward Roe v. Wade.

Kavanaugh eventually said he couldn't think of any such conversations and would need to see a list of the firm's lawyers. The hangers, which have been arriving at Collins' office since July, symbolize the unsafe techniques used in back-alley abortions that take place where abortions are not legal.

"I knowingly violated the rules that were put forth, and I'm told that the committee confidential rules have knowing consequences", Booker said during the hearing.

Kavanaugh sat in silence as members of the Senate Judiciary Committee battled over the release of classified documents related to his time in the George W. Bush White House. But it still left him room to rule for states wishing to regulate away abortion without formally banning it.

Collins has kept quiet about how she will vote.

Meanwhile, a television ad that aired over the weekend urged Collins to vote "yes" on Kavanaugh, touting the judge's qualifications. Senate Republicans denied Garland a hearing and a floor vote.

Kavanaugh maintained that he views Roe v. Wade, which legalized a woman's right to obtain an abortion, as an "important precedent" during his recent Senate hearing, including when he was asked directly about the 2003 email. Orrin Hatch of Utah, Kavanaugh said the same, that he was noting "what legal scholars might say" and offered his comment on the proposed article because he's "always concerned with accuracy".

The pressure on Collins and Murkowski is accordingly intense, with liberal groups running TV ads encouraging them to reject the nomination. Collins said on Friday that was her interpretation of the email as well.
