You have mixed emotions about it because it's frustrating when you let opportunities go, but also when you come in feeling like crap after a loss like you always do, it's also good to see that you're capable of doing a lot better.

Vikings running back Dalvin Cook caught six passes for 55 yards.

DEFENSE DIGS IN: The 49ers gave Garoppolo an opportunity with three straight three-and-out possessions by the Vikings in the fourth quarter.

GETTING TO GAROPPOLO: Garoppolo finished 15 for 33 for 261 yards and a touchdown pass to rookie Dante Pettis late in the third quarter, but the Vikings sacked him three times.

The Vikings did well without Waynes, mostly because rookie Mike Hughes was solid, grabbing his first-career interception and returning it to the house. In that stretch, Garoppolo averaged 308.4 passing yards.

"Misjudged it", Kittle said. Probably ran a bit too far with my arms out. Robert Smith, one of 28 former players who were introduced at halftime, received the loudest ovation.

Fred Zamberletti, the team's original athletic trainer who died last week at age 86, was honoured with a pregame moment of silence. He focused on the current team at the end of his speech.

"We want to see greatness from this team and we want to see them accomplish something that we weren't able to do", Smith told the crowd, "and we want them to do it for you". With three backups on the OL already on the inactive list, rookie Mike McGlinchey had to move from RT to RG with Garry Gilliam taking his place.

Mackensie Alexander (ankle) missed Week 1 as well.

The Minnesota Vikings didn't quite deliver on a summer's worth of hype in Week 1, but the various elements that should make them a contender by season's end were all there.

Cousins took a shoulder to the back from 49ers linebacker Elijah Lee as he tumbled to the turf and came up just short, a unsafe way for a franchise quarterback to try to move the chains, but his determination to experience victory in his Vikings debut on Sunday afternoon was not to be reasoned with.
