The objective of the meeting at the hotel, according to Papadopoulos, was to help make arrangements for then-candidate Trump to meet with Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin-a goal on which Papadopoulos says some of Trump's other advisers were quite keen.

George Papadopoulos, a one-time Trump campaign adviser who was sentenced on Friday to 14 days in jail as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, said Sunday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was "quite enthusiastic" about his potentially setting up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Mifsud told him he had a contact in Russian Federation who could potentially host a summit between Trump and Putin, Papadopoulos said.

"We also want to see Michael Cohen, who has indicated that he would come back without any immunity and testify before our committee, and our committee is the last bipartisan effort that's trying to pursue these facts".

"I'll leave others to make judgments about the veracity of those tweets", Downer said in response to Papadopulos's claims, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

On Monday, Papadopoulos elaborated via Twitter, saying he "failed to introduce [Trump] to Putin", and accused former UK High Commissioner Alexander Downer of wanting to meet "under incredibly suspicious circumstances".

Papadopoulos also said on "The View" that he is an energy specialist who, when he began working on the Trump campaign, had contacts in the Middle East, but not with Russian Federation. He was open to the idea and he deferred of course to then senior Sen.

Papadopoulos, who admitting lying to investigators about his contacts with the academic, became the first person to plead guilty in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Trump says government is 'absolutely, totally prepared' for Hurricane Florence
Florence interrupted her stay on North Carolina's Outer Banks. "The largest threat to life from hurricanes is not the high winds". He has declared states of emergency for North and SC ahead of the storm, which frees up help from federal agencies.

"Obviously that email has never been discovered because I don't remember sending it", Papadopoulos said.

Memos authored by House Republicans and Democrats, now declassified, show that information about Papadopoulos' contacts with Russian intermediaries triggered the FBI's counterintelligence investigation in July 2016 into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.

"As far as I remember, I absolutely did not share this information with anyone on the campaign", the ex-Trump campaign aide told CNN's Tapper.

At the same time, he said he recognized that Papadopoulos had "genuine remorse" for "letting himself get caught up".

Ahead of his sentencing, Papadopoulos asked the court to give him probation for his charge of lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, claiming he was "young" and lied out of "misguided loyalty to his master".

"I don't know Papadopoulos, I don't know", Mr. Trump told reporters Friday.

Papadopoulos was on the campaign's foreign policy team, but Trump aides have downplayed his role and said had no access to Mr. Trump.
