Weather Channel uses mixed reality to show the effects of a hurricane

The Category 1 storm is now gusting at wind speeds of about 90 miles per hour with heavy rain and storm surges expected for the region. The port city of Wilmington woke Friday to the sound of exploding electrical transformers with strong gusts throwing street signs and other debris as well as water in all directions, according to an AFP reporter at the scene.

Hurricane Florence's leading edge is battering the Carolina coast, bending trees and shooting frothy sea water over streets, as the hulking storm closes in with 160kph winds for a drenching siege that could last all weekend.

The effects of Hurricane Florence can already be felt along the coast of North Carolina as of 12 p.m. on September 13. Tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 195 miles, the hurricane center said. While a few tornadoes will also be a possibility in eastern North Carolina today.

The hurricane has been moving at only 3-6 miles per hour as it drops torrential rains.

Enough rain could fall to break North Carolina's record for a tropical storm - 24 inches - set near Wilmington during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, said Greg Carbin, chief of forecast operations at the Weather Service's national prediction center.

According to CNN, the hurricane hit the east coast of the USA with 90-mph winds and relentless rain.

Duke Energy Corp. expected between 25 percent and 75 percent of its 4 million customers would lose power in the Carolinas.

All of the areas where calls for help have come were under mandatory evacuation orders beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Antonio Ramirez, a construction worker from El Salvador living in Leland, North Carolina, said he planned to ride out the worst of the weather with his dog Canelo. Spending, meanwhile, fell more than 30 percent, or around $500 that week, and more than 65 percent on the day of landfall as businesses closed up shop and residents took shelter from the storm.
