Russia is peace-loving state: Putin

Putin called Russian Federation a peace-loving state, which does not and can not have aggressive plans.

More than a thousand soldiers took part in a hyper-realistic recreation of a theater of war and explosions interrupted the normally tranquil region, one of the few in Russian Federation where the population is predominantly Buddhist.

"Russia is a peaceful nation", Putin said Thursday, according to the AP, before adding that it must "be ready to protect its sovereignty, security and national interests, and, if necessary, support our allies".

Putin said the war games demonstrate the Russian army is capable of countering military threats, without naming the aggressors.

"Today here, at the Tsugol range in the Zabaikalsky Territory, the most active stage of the (Vostok-2018) drills came to an end. You held it at high level: all units and formations fulfilled their assigned tasks", said Putin.

North Carolina coast feels Florence’s first blast of wind, rain
The latest forecast models for Hurricane Florence indicate it is now likely to dump rain on parts of NY and CT early next week. People in areas vulnerable to the unsafe hurricane, particularly those in coastal regions, have fled ahead of the storm.

Sergei Shoigu and his Chinese counterpart Wei Fenghe visited the Tsugol firing range in eastern Siberia where the troops were taking part in a joint exercise.

The Chinese and Mongolian armed forces are also participating.

"This is why we will continue to strengthen our armed forces, to provide them with cutting edge arms and equipment and develop our worldwide military partnerships", he said.

Putin, the supreme commander-in-chief of the Russian Armed Forces, observed part of the Vostok-2018, or East-2018, drills held in the eastern part of Russia, a Kremlin statement said.

"That's why 87 observers from 59 countries attend these maneuvers and I welcome all of them", the president said.
