Florence continues to wreak havoc in North and SC

"I have never seen flash flooding like this in our state", said state North Carolina Transport Secretary Jim Trogdon.

Rainfall has totaled over 20 inches in several locations, while some have seen more than 30 inches. Inch after inch of rain fell on Charlotte and its suburbs, and communities in North Carolina's western mountains feared landslides.

"Every major route, and those around them, to the coast is flooded", tweeted the North Carolina Department of Transportation about conditions in eastern North Carolina.

Florence also now stands as the sixth-highest tropical cyclone rainfall total across the US for records dating back to 1950.

At least two people died from electrocution while attempting to connect their generators while one couple died of monoxide poisoning from running their generator indoors, according to reports.

"The water... has gone up 10-15 feet (3 to 4.5 meters) in a few days and it's supposed to keep rising for a few days". This will cause devastating flooding across much of Onslow County with travel made impossible and many homes completely flooded.

Of particular concern were the risks to dams, already stressed by heavy rainfall from a tropical storm earlier in the month, he said, urging citizens to heed official warnings about what was now a "flood event".

Florence is still moving very slowly inland.

It was expected to accelerate to the north on Sunday night and then turn eastward across southern New England on Tuesday.
