"I think the Ballon d'Or has more prestige, more history".

One man who believes that Messi and Ronaldo are not alone amongst the footballing elite is Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, with the recent World Cup victor telling AS that the forward "already sits where Messi and Cristiano are".

Griezmann, 27, stated he should be mentioned in the same breath as Messi and Ronaldo for his achievements in the wake of his FIFA "The Best" award snub.

"It's a prize from Federation Internationale de Football Association and it seems a pity that no World Cup winners were nominated", Griezmann, who helped France to World Cup glory in Russia this summer, told Spanish sports daily AS. "When I hear this guy speak, it reminds me of players such as Totti, Raúl, Buffon, Casillas, Maldini, Xavi or Iniesta, players who have won many awards and titles but never a Ballón d'Or".

But Ramos hit back at the Atletico striker in his press conference before Real Madrid's Champions League clash with Roma on Wednesday evening.

"Cristiano and Messi are above everyone", he told Cadena Ser. "I'm at the summit but I know I can improve, I want to be the most complete player possible".

In contrast to FIFA's prize, the Ballon d'Or victor is determined by votes from journalists, and Griezmann described the prize as more prestigious.

However, despite of his achievements this year, Griezmann was snubbed by Federation Internationale de Football Association from its final 3-man shortlist for the best player award.

"Being at that table is a vision I have but I also know that I can do better".

"Everyone is free to express their opinion but I think he should take the advice of (Diego) Simeone, (Diego) Godin or Koke who represent the values that serve them [Atletico Madrid] well". "Having said that I do feel he is a great player".

"I trust them and we contribute to each other a lot".
