Rosenstein a year ago talked with other officials about invoking the 25th Amendment and wearing a wire during meetings with Trump. If Rosenstein were to leave office, U.S. Solicitor General Noel Francisco would be in line to oversee the Russian Federation probe.

"He's expecting to be fired", a source tells Axios.

Trump told Geraldo Rivera in an interview aired Monday that he's looking at what, if anything, to do about Rosenstein's reported actions. It is to Trump's advantage if Rosenstein officially resigns, because it allows Trump to handpick his successor.

Rosenstein issued a pair of denials, saying the Times report is inaccurate. "I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the department and are advancing their own personal agenda. But let me clear about this: Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment".

The president has described Mr. McCabe, who was later fired, as a liar.

Yankees-Red Sox Series Heats up AL East Race
The New York Yankees won the series, winning 8-1, losing 11-0, and winning 11-1 to make up some ground on their rivals. Despite sitting on top for much of the season, the Boston Red Sox are expected to lose steam as the season progresses.

Other stories this week included news about the booming economy (and whom to thank for it), testing of a new presidential alert system and moves by North Korea to speed up denuclearization.

Trump has repeatedly dismissed the Mueller probe as a "witch hunt" created to delegitimize his election victory and undermine his presidency.

The administration official, whom Trump has called for a federal investigation to unmask, wrote that there was a group of officials working to safeguard the country from the president's most unsafe impulses.

He has denied the allegations, and Trump had said earlier that he wasn't sure what the deputy AG's fate would be.
