At Kavanaugh's former school Yale, students transfixed by hearing

Opening the session on Thursday morning, Republican senator Chuck Grassley thanked both Kavanaugh and his accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, for appearing before the committee.

Ford said she received a call from the office of Congresswoman Anna Eshoo in July after Kavanaugh was nominated to the top court.

Picked by President Donald Trump, Kavanaugh is seeking to fill the Supreme Court's pivotal ninth seat.

"I'm married, I have a wonderful family, I have a wonderful husband, I have a child and great-grandchildren and grandchildren", she added.

"I was not ideal in those days, just as I am not flawless today", Kavanaugh will state. Ford delivered her testimony with deliberate certitude, though admitting gaps in her memory as she choked back tears at some points and said she "believed he was going to rape me".

Kavanaugh has also been accused of exposing himself to a classmate, Deborah Ramirez, during an alcohol-fuelled Yale University party a few years later.

The subcommittee would have authority to subpoena witnesses, documents, and emails related to Kavanaugh . Kavanaugh denies the incident ever took place. "I think you're going to see it in the midterms".

Republican Judiciary committee staffers on Wednesday were trying to interview another woman, Julie Swetnick.

Democratic questioners will include two senators widely seen as potential presidential candidates in 2020: Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey, who aggressively challenged Kavanaugh during the judge's earlier confirmation hearing. Blasey Ford Thursday, has denied all of the accusations.

While Republicans want to move forward, they are mindful of the fallout if they do not take the accusations seriously.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell all week has said Republicans will turn to a committee vote on Kavanaugh after the hearing.

The Republicans have refused to call additional witnesses for Prof.

He lashed out at the committee over the time it has taken to convene the hearing after Christine Blasey Ford's allegation first emerged. They have also turned down Prof. Whenever the Federal Bureau of Investigation is dispatched every committee member should be notified of the allegation.

Trump dismissed the allegations against Kavanaugh as a "big fat con job" orchestrated by Democrats. Chuck Grassley said the committee is now reviewing the document.

"Sometimes I had too many beers", he acknowledged. "I've had many false charges". "I believed that if I came forward, my voice would be drowned out by a chorus of powerful supporters".

But some Republicans have expressed reservations about rushing through Justice Kavanaugh's nomination.
